Daily Devotional: Monday, Sept 14

I love the start of football season, the cooler nights, pumpkins, apple cider, and God's splendor as seen in the fall colors. What a weekend we just had!! The weather couldn't have been more perfect, even the Huskies won (sorry Cougs), and to top it off the Seahawks started the season with a win. It got me to thinking though, what if the outcomes were just a little different? Pouring rain, followed by a UW loss to Idaho , and capped with a stunning loss by the Seahawks to the Rams...I am pretty convinced I wouldn't have been quite so buoyant in my outlook. If you are like me, you might find yourself frequently tossed to and fro by the occurrences of everyday life. Do you let the small inconveniences that fall across your path become thoughts of entitlement and privilege? I do. It's too hot, it's too cold, my boss doesn't appreciate me, I am too fat, I am too skinny, if only....The trouble with this thinking is that there is no end to the inconveniences which come our way in life. If that's true , and I am pretty sure it is, what is the solution to dealing with the everyday annoyances that buzz us like an unwanted gnat? What grabbed me in Ben's message was how Unclear Purpose can cause us to become negative. This is certainly part of the key in making sure that life's inconveniences don't consume us and cause us to become negative. Having a clear purpose, one that is God breathed for your life, certainly puts the buzzing gnats of life in perspective. In fact it can even eliminate some of these pesky little critters as we focus on what is really important for our life and allow us to celebrate and praise the Lord for His goodness and grace. Do: Spend time with the Lord, in prayer and in His word. Focus upon Him. Ask Him (he is a Great Listener, the best I know) to help you really, truly, understand your purpose this side of heaven. Pray: Heavenly Father, I admit it I am guilty of letting life's annoyances get me down. I ask for your forgiveness for focusing on what is unimportant. I ask for your help in discovering the purpose you have for me. I trust the direction You have for my life, and even the uncertainty that may exist today, because in You I have an unshakeable fortress where I can find strength. I love you Lord God. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. The eDevotional is written each week by a team of volunteers from Timberlake Church. |
