Daily Devotional: Tuesday, October 6![]() Weekend Speaker: Ben Sigman Theme: Wisdom Weekend Music links on iTunes: Today is the Day by Lincoln Brewster; Holy Is the Lord by Chris Tomlin; You'll Come by Hillsong United; For Who You Are by Hillsong. Read: Proverbs 1:7; Proverbs 3: 5-6; Deuteronomy 6: 1-3 Proverbs Challenge Chapter of the Day: Proverbs Chapter 3 Think: Pastor Ben's sermon about wisdom provides each of us an opportunity to search our own lives for this desirable characteristic. King Solomon wrote, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." To better understand Solomon's message, we need to be aware that he used the word ‘fear' to imply honor, respect, awe, and obedience to God. When these words are used in place of the word ‘fear', the verse takes on even greater meaning. "Wisdom" of the world is constantly biding for a position in our lives through media, relationships, changing norms, integrated culture, and religion. It is difficult at times to avoid the impact these might have on our interpretation of what may seem like wisdom. Powerful or successful people may seem wise, but when tested next to Pastor Ben's number one criteria for living wisely--Do start with God--those people may not be wise after all. There is no need for further evaluation if the number one criterion isn't met. It is too easy to lean on our own understanding or to be convinced by others that we are on the right path, therefore we must have a solid foundation if we are to truly live as God would desire. Do: Ask yourself if your life reveals a "fear of the Lord". Does the advice you seek and share have the basis necessary to be considered wise? Ask God to not only give you wisdom, but to surround you with wise people as well. Pray: Dear Lord Jesus, we thank you for giving us such direct instructions on how to live wisely. I am in awe of your power and am eager to embrace the knowledge you have made available to me through your Word. Please fill me with your wisdom so that I may be a light in this dark world. Amen.
