Proverbs Challenge Chapter of the Day: Proverbs 12

Think: My mom lived a lot of life if you know what I mean. She was full of personality and experience and she understood people like no one else I've ever met. She was well-liked but was definitely a straight shooter (i.e. you didn't have to wonder for long how she really felt about you or any issue that came up).

She was known for her sayings - my siblings and I all called them "Mom-isms". They were home-grown adages/truths/vignettes that provided just a little bit life's wisdom. There wasn't a situation that came about that Mom didn't have a pithy saying to help you navigate it.

The Mom-ism I heard a thousand times during my growing up years was, "You catch more flies with honey than vinegar!" Not exactly difficult to understand, especially for one who was (is?) inclined to have a pretty vinegar-ish disposition. The same sentiment is reflected in Scripture over and over and has been our theme for the week at Timberlake. (You'll find a few proverbs in today's reading challenge that speak to this.) Our words matter and we choose how we use them!

The sweetness of God's Word is our perfect example to follow: Psalm 119:103 says "How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" God's word, the bible, is His handbook for life just for you and me. It is filled with His love for us, His guidance, His warnings and instruction to lead us perfectly and WISELY through this thing called life!

Do: Fill your day with sweet, honey-like words today - well-placed, kind or healing words as Proverbs says. See how many people you can impact today just by a quick and caring word. Be sure to spend some time reading God's sweeter-than-honey word to you as well!

Pray: Lord, fill my mouth with Your words as I interact with others today. When my reaction may be to go ‘sour', let Your sweet, healing, kind words take their place. Help me to control what I say, and the manner in which I say it. I want my words bring You honor and glory. Amen.

The eDevotional is written each week by a team of volunteers from Timberlake Church.
