It means a lot to me to hear someone say those words, but at the same time it's a position I feel a little intimidated by and I try hard to live up to the title. I guess I feel that way because we don't always do such a great job at being best friends. As much as we care about each other, there are days we forget to do what we should to keep our relationship tight or sometimes we let selfishness or busy-ness stand in the way of our friendship. Its part of life, no matter how hard we try, we can't always live up to the high standard of being a best friend. But I know One who can... Jesus is the ultimate example of a true best friend - He never fails us and will never leave us. Followers of Christ can rest in the fact that we are called a friend of God. Michael Gungor, a popular Christian artist, had a great song a few years back called "Friend of God". Read his lyrics and how they reveal the truth of our relationship with God.
Abraham was called "the friend of God," and that friendship was directly tied to his faith in God. Jesus told us how we can receive that designation as well. He said to His followers, "You are My friends if you do whatever I command you". There isn't a better or more worthy best friend, for we know that He will never leave us nor forsake us. So if you are looking for the best friend ever, trust that you can't do better than the Lord Himself! And He wants to be that for you...right here...right now! Do: If you haven't ever chosen to become a friend of God, do it today. It's as simple as a heartfelt prayer, asking Jesus to be Lord of your life. If you've taken that step already, maybe today's the day you do a self check and make any changes you need to make to be sure that friendship is a priority in your life. Pray: God, what an amazing thing that you call me your friend... Help me to trust that and to live fully in the knowledge that you know me, love me, accept me and are right here with me as my Lord, my Savior and my Best Friend. Amen.
