Think: President Truman said once, "Humility is having an accurate assessment of yourself." Sometimes that is not an easy thing to do. On one hand, we can have an ideal sense of ourselves that fosters perfectionistic expectations.  On another hand, we can have a poor sense of ourselves being unable to see ourselves as worthy persons. But somewhere in the middle, there is the "real" self- the one God knows and loves.

The people who are closest to us usually know the "real" us-the good, the bad, and the in between. That's the great thing about the church body-it is a place where we can be "real" instead of the "ideal".  Sooner or later, we stop being on our "best behavior" and just let the real person show. This is when the love of Christ can really start to work within the body. We see and love each other just the way we are.

When we can accept ourselves as the real deal-a mixed bag of potential and flaws, success and defeat, good choices and bad, strengths and weaknesses, then we are able to accept other people the same way. We are able to offer acceptance to others the same way we have experienced Christ's acceptance of us.

Do: Commit to having an accurate assessment of yourself- having the humility to accept yourself as you are, and surrendering all that you are to God.

Pray: Jesus, help me to recognize who I really am in you. Help me to see myself the way you see me, and help me to be open to what you are doing in my life. Help me to accept the sinful world as it is, not as I would have it. I will trust that you will make all things right as I trust you. Amen.

The eDevotional is written each week by a team of volunteers from Timberlake Church.
