Daily Devotional: Wednesday, Jan 27
Speaker: Ben Sigman Theme: Love Weekend Music links on iTunes: All Over the Worldby Matt Redman; Majestic by Lincoln Brewster; To the Ends of the Earthby Hillsong United; Healerby Kari Jobe.
Read: Philippians 4:8; Deuteronomy 11:18-22; Matthew 6:21 Think: Pastor Ben told us this weekend that "we become like that thing we love". And included that "we need to be careful what we love". Herbert Marshall McLuhan was a 20th century educator, philosopher and Rhodes Scholar and developed the concept of "media theory". In a 1964 book Understanding Media: the Extension of Man he developed the thought "we become what we behold" where he warned of the influence of pop culture that worships its own inventions. We clearly haven't heeded his warnings as we observe real life copycat television crimes and the cultural obsession with media stars. The Bible gives a positive spin on obsession that leads to godliness. Deuteronomy 11:18-22 "Fix these words in your hearts and minds, tie them on your hands and foreheads... write them on your doorframes... love the LORD your God...walk in all his ways and to hold fast to him... And I love Philippians 4:8 where we are encouraged to fill our minds with what is true, right, lovely and pure. My family is going through a New Years purging in preparation for a move to a new house. We found a box containing 30 years of birthday, anniversary, mother's and father's day cards. Reading the kindnesses, affection, encouragements and humor over the years was like opening buried treasure. An investment of love has paid a wonderful dividend. Matthew 6:21 "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". Do: Make God and His word your "magnificent obsession". Think about what you treasure and whether the investment has lasting benefits. Pray: Father, I waste so much time and energy on things and activities that produce no lasting benefit in my life, forgive me. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and guide me to all truth, teach me Your ways and help me remember the things You have said to me. Amen The eDevotional is written each week by a team of volunteers from Timberlake Church. |
