Monday |Leaving a legacy
Daily Devotional: Monday, May 3Speaker: Ben Sigman Theme: Leaving a Legacy Weekend Music links on iTunes: All Because of Jesus by Fee; Run by Hillsong United; Glory by Hillsong; Til I See You by Hillsong. Read: 1 John 2:15-17; Psalm 39:4-5 Think: Maxine was my grandma’s name. She was an artist, a seamstress and a finger-lickin-good chicken dumpling chef- but she was just grandma to me. She converted a little lighted closet, in her one bedroom house into an artist’s studio. That is where she painted the picture that is hanging on my wall today, where she sewed my mother’s childhood clothes, and where she sewed my sister’s wedding dress. Today, I teach my daughters how to sow because my grandma taught my mother, and my mother taught me. It is a way to pass on the artisan legacy. Though my daughters and Maxine will never know each other, my grandma has successfully passed on the gift of creating to them. 1 John 2:17 says “The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.” When we engage in godly things, it’s like casting a rock into a pond and watching the ripples reach the shore. God’s ways have far reaching effects. Godly things, like seeking restoration, forgiving others, loving your enemies, and standing up for what is right, are the things that last forever. Like the ripple effect, our acts of godliness minister hope and healing far beyond what we can see. But doing things according to the world’s methods burns out over time, not to mention burns us out along the way. Maxine shared a skill that has inspired for generations- and that was just with a simple needle and thread. Think of the value our spiritual skills have in the lives of those around us. As we model kindness, self-control, and wisdom to those in our sphere of influence, we will have far reaching affects in the lives of generations to come. Do: Thank God for the opportunities you have to influence the world around you for good. Think of one spiritual gift you would like to pass on to those you love. Pray: God, help me to sense the opportunity and the responsibility you have given me with the people I know. Help me to take what I know about You and apply it in meaningful ways to be salt and light to the world around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
