Speaker: Ben Sigman Theme: Worship Weekend Music links on iTunes: Today is the Day by Lincoln Brewster; Run by Hillsong United; Love Came Down by Ben Cantelon; Desert Song by Hillsong United. Read: 1 Corinthians 10:31 Think: I have to admit that I was very relieved to hear Ben say that true worship doesn’t depend on me clapping on beat or singing in tune. I fall into the camp of men who want the volume to be at rock concert decibel so that there is no chance anyone is tortured by the sound of my singing voice. But if worship isn’t just the music on Sunday morning (or Saturday night for those of us who want to see the Seahawks in the fall), what is worship? John MacAurthur defines worship as “our innermost being responding with praise for all that God is, through our attitudes, actions, thoughts, and words, based on the truth of God as He has revealed Himself.” More simply put, worship is recognizing and delighting in how awesome God is. This definitely happens on Sunday when we sing during the music, although it requires a conscious effort to fix our hearts on God. Worship is more than just singing or reciting the words on the screen. As Ben pointed out, there are multiple ways besides music and singing to worship God including prayer, giving, serving, meditation, reading the Bible, and obeying God. When we do any of these things out of love for God and acknowledgment of Him, this is worship and brings a smile to His face. When we think of worship in this light, many of the mundane tasks of our days can be an opportunity to bring glory to God. Whether it is doing dishes for your tired spouse or babysitting for a neighbor or any number of activities, when we do it out of love for God, this is worship. I often find that when I silently tell God I’m doing an act of service out of love for Him, I find the task much more fulfilling than I would ordinarily expect. Do: Think about everyday activities that you can do for God’s glory. Take a moment before you begin to pray and dedicate the time to Him. You’ll be surprised how God touches your heart. Pray: God, please reveal to me ways that I can express my love to you and acknowledge how awesome you are.
