Speaker: Ben Sigman Theme: Unresolved Conflict Weekend Music links on iTunes: The Time Has Come, Let God Arise, Strong Tower, Come Thou Fount Read: James 1: 19-20; Philippians 4: 6-7 Think: Are you ever humbled and amazed at God’s word? I am. Not as much as I care to admit, but that is my fault, and certainly not the author. I am humbled when I see the clear truth and extraordinary guidance He (God) gives us to live our lives as He (God) desires. I see it when I take the time to really grasp and apply His word. If I took this advice more often, it surely would have saved me a lot of unresolved conflict in my life. If you are like me I am a conflict avoider. I’ll run, hide, dodge, joke, turn around, and do it all again to avoid conflict. It’s a temporary salve with some long term consequences. What I love about God is that He already knows that about me!! He knows I get anxious, He knows that I may get emotional, He knows that I can be self righteous, and so He provides words of wisdom that when applied can help us through some of life’s most challenging moments. Two of my favorite scripture verses are part of today’s reading. They provide guidance and wisdom as we seek to resolve conflict in our lives. “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” It’s just the opposite of what we often do!! God knows the power of the tongue to do harm and the power of the ear to provide comfort to others. I often repeat this verse to myself when I have to confront difficult circumstances. “Don’t be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. No qualifiers here…don’t be anxious about anything, but in every situation, through prayer and petition….go to God first!! He will provide protection to our hearts and our minds when we truly seek him in prayer. I wish I heeded this advice more often before I foolishly attempt to resolve conflict of my own accord. Do: Today seek to listen first…truly listen. You know the kind where the person speaking really knows you are listening intently. Check yourself before speaking, ask God to give you understanding, compassion, grace, and wisdom in your words. Pray: Heavenly Father you know my ways. You provide wisdom and comfort to me in all my circumstances. Thank you for your divine word and I pray that today I truly hear it, truly understand it, and truly apply it to my life today. In Jesus name. Amen.
