Speaker: Ben Sigman Theme: What I Said Yes To Weekend Music links on iTunes: Let the Praises Ring - Lincoln Brewster, Run - Hillsong - Jesus Culture, Let God Arise - Chris Tomlin, How He Loves - David Crowder Read: Philippians 2:3-8, James 1:5, James 3:16-18 Think: In Pastor Ben’s message this week on marriage he uses Philippians 2:3-8 to call us to a Biblical standard for our marriages and our lives. Wow, is that tough instruction. The first three words are completely counter to human behavior. “Don’t be selfish”. I investigated what the Child Development Institute had to say about social development. A new born baby is helpless, asocial, fed by mother. But by 18 months a baby’s social development milestones are: resentment of new baby and does opposite of what they are told. By 2 years they talk, using "I" and "me", are possessive about toys, give orders and have a rigid insistence on sameness of routine. Selfishness is built into the human condition. James gives us some clues on how to overcome this condition. James 1:5 tells us to ask for wisdom. James 3:16-18 tells us that wisdom from above is willing to yield, without partiality and full of mercy. In our humanity we are self seeking, self interested and selfish. In the wisdom of God we can overcome our human nature and take on God’s nature. Do: Get up every morning this week and pray for God’s wisdom. Pray: Father, I want to live today demonstrating Your nature and not my own to my family and my world, please give me your wisdom today. The eDevotional is written each week by a team of volunteers from Timberlake Church. |
