A Scottish wedding ceremony often includes the bride and groom joining hands and a piece of the groom’s family tartan binding their hands together. “Tying the knot” comes from this ceremony. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 starts by talking about the combined strength of two but ends with a reference to how a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. In our wedding we say yes to combining two lives but when we need real strength to survive the troubles of the world we need our hands joined and bound together by God. My wife and I have had a wonderful marriage and after 30 years still hold hands a lot. But when I was diagnosed with cancer twice, when our software business failed, when I was unemployed for sixteen months after 9/11 we could really experience our hands bound together by God. We are aware that when we pray together, spend time discussing the week’s message and worship the Lord together that cord becomes stronger. Do: Hold hands more with the ones you love. Imagine that cord that Ecclesiastes describes holding you together. Pray together this week. Pray: Father, I need you in the middle of my relationships binding us together with Your love. Come and tie that knot today. The eDevotional is written each week by a team of volunteers from Timberlake Church.
