Think: What would you nominate for a list of the most important objects in history? The Wright Flyer? Shakespeare’s pen? Moses’ staff? How about the The Nina, The Pinta, or The Santa Maria? Bell’s first telephone? Beethoven’s piano? Hank Aaron’s bat? Personally, I would put Mrs. Field’s cookie sheet on the list.
It is interesting that such a list would probably be filled with some pretty ordinary items. But these items became extraordinary in the right hands. A piece of parchment and some ink isn’t much – until Thomas Jefferson uses them to draft the Declaration of Independence.
There are numerous Bible stories that reflect a similar pattern. David used a small stone to kill Goliath. Jesus fed thousands with a few loaves and fish. And Moses – well, his staff turned out to be a sort of supernatural Swiss Army knife, turning into a serpent, bringing about plagues, and dividing the Red Sea. Everyday objects became extraordinary when devoted to God’s purposes.
Over the weekend, Pastor Dave pointed out that God works through the mundane. Sometimes, that means everyday objects, sometimes commonplace occurrences, and, often, ordinary people. But all of the stuff of our lives – our time, our relationships, our possessions, our talents – can become extraordinary when yielded to God. Give all that you have to God for His purpose, and watch what He does.
Do: Find something ordinary in your life that you know you need to surrender to God, and make that decision today.
Pray: Lord, I’m no Moses, or David, or Shakespeare. But I believe that you can use me and the mundane circumstances of my life. Take all of me and all I have, God, to use to do Your will. Amen.
