Think: As we’ve been talking about questions of faith and following Jesus this week it seems to me one of the most fundamental questions we have to ask that cuts through all the other all others is this: Is Jesus enough?
If I’m suffering, is Jesus enough? If I lose my job and my family is in trouble, is Jesus enough? If I can’t understand why (fill in the blank), is Jesus enough?
If we’re honest we might find ourselves looking beyond Him for our answer or our fulfillment. As I look at my own history I know looked in many other places - possessions, career goal, and certain bank balance… None of which were much of a substitute.
Having wealth, prominence, success, etc. certainly isn’t condemned in Scripture – often it’s a sign of God’s blessing as we follow Him and live according to His Word. It’s when we get our priorities out of order that we have to once again remind ourselves that Jesus—not net worth, status or ANYTHING else—sustains us.
The Apostle Peter helps us with this in the story of the lame man begging at the temple gate in Jerusalem. This man asked Peter for money, but Peter replied, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk” (Acts 3:6).The man lying at the gate thought the answer to his problems that day was money, but Peter showed him that the answer was Jesus. And He still is.
I met a woman a few weeks ago that was an undercover missionary in China for a number of years. She talked about how they didn’t have any community prominence, they didn’t even have a real place they could meet, and certainly couldn’t run big programs or high tech gospel presentations. What she did say was “All we had to give people was Jesus.” And that was more than enough. Today, the Gospel is reaching thousands and thousands of Chinese nationals. It’s estimated in fact that there are well over 23 million believers in Jesus Christ today in China!!! Amazing things are happening in a place where faith was excluded and condemned for years.
Do: Jesus is enough for changing the lives and eternities for people in China and throughout the globe. He is enough for the poor, the suffering, the downtrodden, the displaced. But let’s make it personal, Is He enough for you?
Pray: Lord, you know where I’m trusting things other than YOU… and I’m sorry that I’ve allowed myself to put those in the place that is rightfully yours. You are enough for me! You are enough to meet my needs, fill my heart, to give me the meaning and purpose I desire. Today I can wholeheartedly say you are all I need. The eDevotional is written each week by a team of volunteers from Timberlake Church.
