Think: There is an African proverb that says, “The one who asks questions doesn’t lose his way.” That sounds pretty accurate doesn’t it? Over the past weekend at Timberlake we all had the opportunity to text and email our questions about faith and walking with Christ. For some reason lots of people feel like it’s bad or wrong to have doubts and questions. But that’s not the case at all --- in reality it’s such a good healthy thing. After all - It’s one of the key ways we find our way!!!
Let’s look at David – a man after God’s own heart – and the many, many questions he had:
• “O Lord—how long?” (Psalm 6:3). A question showing his frustration at waiting to see God’s plan carried out.
• “What is man that You are mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:4). A question of awe that God even cares about me, a sinful man.
• “Why do You hide in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1). A question that reveals a heart seeking God’s presence and the ultimate need to know God is there.
• “Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill?” (15:1) The ultimate question of who gets to live with God for eternity.
I don’t know about you, but it’s so comforting for me to know that David, the great man of God, had questions too! And David had some tough questions for God, but he was seeking God’s guidance and direction at the same time. He had experienced what it was like to lose his way when he excluded God and followed his own sinful ways. But as he so eloquently wrote in the Psalms, he was a man in search of God and how to live for Him… and that meant asking the tough questions and waiting for the Lord’s reply.
Do: It’s ok to ask questions. Like David we all have them. Keep asking but through faith in God’s Word and the work of the Holy Spirit, listen as He leads you in His way.
Pray: Lord, you know where I struggle to understand and the situations that cause me to doubt… Lord help me to not be afraid to ask the questions. But help me to not stop there… but to listen for Your voice that leads me to Your truth and Godly understanding. Amen.
