Wednesday - So Much More than Comfortable
Wednesday, July 13, 2011
Weekend Speaker: Dave Nelson
Theme: Is It Just Me?
Read: 2 Corinthians 1:3-7, Mark 1:6; Romans 15:5
Think: Do we really need that new pair of shoes? Do we really need that new pair of sunglasses? How much do we really need that new 50” color TV? When hearing Pastor Dave speak about comfort, I looked around to see how beautiful our church was, how great the BBQ was and just an overall sense of being satiated in my life. But is this it? Is this what I strive for? Is being comfortable bad?
And… does being uncomfortable bring me closer to God?
There have been many of individuals in the bible that have been comfortable, Saul, David and many people in the bible that have been less than comfortable. One such example is John the Baptist how he lived his life. In Mark 1:6 it states, “John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.”
Being uncomfortable does not grow you closer to the Lord but what Pastor Dave did say was huge for me - being comfortable is not a sin until the desire for comfort becomes the number one priority in my life.
I have a tendency to pray for the obtainable not the extraordinary. Pastor Dave’s message hit the nail right on the head… in speaking about praying for boldness and what it can do in one’s life. So rather than praying for the big year-end bonus, or to get the full asking price for the house, or to get your child into that perfect daycare, how about turning the prayers I do pray to those of boldness!!! Ask God to work a miracle in your life, believe Him for the impossible, know and trust in His Power!
Do: Don’t let comfort rule your life, pray for boldness in living for Christ and see how God will change you. Live fully for Him and He will provide so much MORE than comfort!
Pray: Lord, please allow me to understand what things that I need to pray for as I seek You… Show me where I’m willing to settle for “comfortable” and reduce my focus on increasing comforts but to be about praying for boldness as I work to do your will with my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
