THINK: Pastor Ben taught us this last weekend about God’s Design for Sex. He used the phrase “Men are like microwaves and women are like crockpots”. There are so many Men are like… jokes and most of them aren’t very complimentary. But I’ve found as a husband, it’s helpful to intimacy to keep my wife’s differences in mind.
One of the great explanations was in Dr. John Gray’s book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. He describes in the book the way men and women keep score. Men think that when we give some big gift of love like a new car or a vacation, we get big scores like 30 points but as Dr. Gray describes it, a woman gives every gift the same one point score. So as husbands we spend lots of time and energy focusing on the big things we can do when if we’d focus on lots of small gifts like conversation, tenderness and time together we’d have more of a Song of Solomon sex life.
I’ve found that sex in marriage results from each partner feeling good about where they are and coming together to share that good feeling. God made us in His own image (Gen. 1:27) male and female, but we are so different. We need to focus on what others need, not just what we need.
DO: Make some time this week to ask what someone needs from you. In all things, not just sexual, we need to be aware of what we can give and not just what we can get.
PRAY: Father, You give and give to me everyday, thank you. Help me to give to those around me and. I pray especially with my spouse that I would be sensitive to what they need and respond with self-less love and care. Amen
