Weekend Speaker: Ben Sigman
Theme: Love Sex and Marriage - God's Design for Sex
This eDevotional was written by a volunteer from Timberlake Church.
READ: Romans 12:2-1 (The Message); Romans 12:2-1 (NIV); Matthew 22:36-38 (NIV); Acts 3:19 (NIV); Romans 8:28 (NIV)
THINK: I would like to say that I have lived a pure life sexually, but I can’t say that and be truthful. Pastor Ben spoke this weekend about four different views of sex. Sex as a natural appetite, sex as an animal passion, sex as repressed creativity, and sex as a gift from God.
I am many many years removed from my youth, but this area probably caused me more angst than anything I can remember. It challenged my beliefs, my integrity, and my strength as a young man. Now looking back these many years it is so apparent that I gave into the pressures and mantra of the world: be a man; express yourself don’t repress yourself; don’t be old fashioned; if you loved me you would….and so the story goes.
It’s a common story really. Everyone else is doing it, and if I am not, then something must be wrong with me. I bought into that thinking lock, stock, and barrel. I am thankful to this day that I was never happy or satisfied with these youthful dalliances. I wish I could also say that the lesson was learned quickly and that I sought God with all my heart; but I also can’t say that and remain truthful. The truth is that I looked for someone else to fill a void that only God can fill.
Now many years down the road I see God’s plan in a new perspective; His law and His order are perfect. Today’s readings are a lesson for me not only in the area of sexual purity but a lesson in God’s desire and His love for me.
- The ways of the world (Romans 12:2-1)
- I guess I don’t have to follow the world
- God’s greatest command (Matthew 22:36-38)
- He invites us to love Him
- Repentance (Acts 3:19)
- He forgives us of our sin
- Redemption (Romans 8:28)
- He can turn my messes into something beautiful
He (God) is faithful to forgive us our trespasses. I am thankful I know Him. No matter our sin, He desires a relationship with us. Today someone needs to turn their heart to Jesus. Is it you? Is it today?
DO: Perhaps you have a sexual history that you are not too proud of like myself. Do you need to ask for God’s forgiveness? He is faithful and just to forgive. If He is faithful and just to forgive, and you have asked Him for forgiveness, then I encourage you (beg of you really) to also forgive yourself.
PRAY: Father God I give you my heart today. Take it, shape it, do with it as you desire. Hold me tenderly as only you can; teach me your ways. Forgive me, transform me. I love you with all of my heart, soul and mind. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
