Weekend Speaker:  Ben Sigman

Theme:   A Surprising Key to Getting Unstuck - Gratitude versus Entitlement

This eDevotional was written by a volunteer from Timberlake Church.

Read: Psalm 92:12-14; Isaiah 58:11

Think: I love the title to the song Stuck in the Middle With You  - it's by a band called Stealers Wheel and it fits this message series we're in at church. I even think that some of the lyrics are appropriate such as “clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am…” . I know that I am often 'influenced' (read tempted) by some clowns and jokers and may fall prey to moving from God but if I stay in the middle of God’s will, I am always safe.

When Pastor Nick asked last weekend “What are your goals for the New Year?” I thought about some expectations that I have for my life such as simply living through 2012, making new friends, teaching my kids about God and reading the Bible more to name a few. I stopped making resolutions long ago but have a standing one and that is to make at least one new friend. I’m big on relationships and I want to make sure I am focused on strengthening existing friendships, making new connections and most important, growing closer to God.

I am one who constantly seeks contentment in my life and in this world it is often a struggle. Two scripture passages that especially speak to me are Proverbs 1:33 NIV “ Whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” and Philippians 4:19 KJV “But my God will supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus”. When I dwell on these comforting words, a huge burden is lifted and contentment overwhelms me. Wow, seems so simple in word but putting it into practice is a challenge sometimes.

Last week Nick talked about how tough times allow me to grow in my relationship with God. How can I use those temptation tips that were in the notes? I’d like to focus on number 2, Get a Spiritual Partner. When I allow others into my life , yes I am vulnerable but even more so I grow stronger. I have men (and women) who I trust to give me wise counsel, to listen to me rant and suggest ways to become right sized, to pray for me and my family in time of need and much, much more. Small groups are a place of accountability, fellowship and growth in God. They are an integral part of my faith life. I hope that all who read this will consider joining a group so that you can experience how wonderful relationships are and how it makes church, faith, life so much easier when you have people who know you and care for you.

In Ecclesiastes 4:10 are the words “…your friend can help you up.” And this is so true of our father God and our growth in him. Give it a go!

Do: Be willing to either lead or join a growth group to deepen your faith, to tackle that problem you've been avoiding, to learn more about the Bible or any reason that will surely help you grow as a child of God. Know that he is always there with you - when you fail, are tempted or in trouble. Your strength lies in trusting him. Reach out to someone in need of a friend, simply listen without trying to solve.

Pray: God my Father, take away any anxieties I may have and replace it with your comfort as you have for many throughout the ages. I thank you for your reassuring presence in my life and help me to see and be your light to others in need. I know that when I am helping others, my troubles are diminished. I love you so much and am grateful to you. Amen!
