Jeremiah Writes God’s Words Down God’s Word Cannot Be Destroyed—Jeremiah 36
We believe that spiritual development happens in the home as well as at church. We hope that these ideas will help you engage as a family. It’s designed to help you connect with your child about the lesson they had this past week. Use all the ideas one night, or spread them out throughout the week. Enjoy!
- ACTIVITY (items needed: Bible)
This week your kids learned that God’s Word is a treasure and that it needs to be taken seriously. We learned to treasure the Bible by reading it, singing it, praying it, sharing it, and memorizing it. Make a list of the ways you treasure God’s Word in your home using the following questions.
- Do you read the Bible individually? As a family?
- When do you pray individually? As a family?
- Where do we sing songs that honor God?
- Have you memorized any scriptures you’d like to share?
- When is the last time you shared God’s words with someone else?
Today is a great day to start to do these if you feel like you are missing out!
- SNACK (items needed: Flour Tortillas, Margarine, Sugar, Cinnamon, table knife, paper plates)
Cut the rounded edges off of large flour tortillas—the thinnest ones you can find—to make them rectangular in shape. The kids will spread a thin layer of margarine over one side of the tortilla. Then, they can sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
Once the condiments are on the tortilla, roll the tortilla tightly from one end toward the middle. Now, roll the other end toward the middle. You have just made a tortilla scroll, just like the one that Baruch wrote the words on that God gave Jeremiah.
- GAME: (items needed: Bibles)
Look up the following verses in your Bible. Send kids on a scavenger hunt to collect one item from each verse and bring them back to you. It’s important to practice looking up verses, so we’ll be able to use the Bible that God gave us. (If they aren’t sure where to find the books in the Bible, encourage them to look at the Table of Contents found in the front of their Bible).
We don’t just pick it up and read it the way we read other books. How is it different from reading other books?
- Ezekiel 37:16
- Matthew 16:7
- Job 13:25
- Joshua 4:3
- Numbers 20:2
- Genesis 19:26
- Luke 15:8
- Matthew 13:24
- CRAFT (items needed: New Pencils, White Copy Paper, Clear Tape, Hot water, tea bags, ballpoint pens, table covering, Bibles)
***Note—craft can be messy, make sure there is a table cover and clothes appropriate for getting a little messy***
Beforehand, put some tea bags in hot water to soak.
Give each child a piece of white copy paper. They will tear about an inch off of each long side to make it a little jagged. The kids will look up Hebrews 4:12. keeping the paper going lengthwise in front of them, the kids will copy this scripture onto their paper. Now, gently wad up the paper, then flatten it out. Wad it up again, and flatten it out.
The kids will use a squeezed-out tea bag to rub all over their paper. The tea will slightly stain the paper to make it look old. It will also leave the paper fragile, so warn kids to handle with care. Lay a pencil at each end of the paper and apply a piece of tape to attach the paper to the pencil. Once the paper has dried a bit, the kids can roll both pencils towards the middle until they come together to look like a scroll.
This scroll looks much like the scroll on which Baruch wrote the words that Jeremiah dictated to him.
- MUSIC: (items needed: Youtube Video Clip)
Download this fun YouTube video called “Go Fish – Bible Book Bop” submitted by gfguys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63UlqUyg8FI.
In order to use the Bible with ease, we need to know the books. There are 66 books in the Bible and that’s a lot to remember. But, here’s a song that’s going to make that a whole bunch easier! Adults and kids are going to love this song … and you might be surprised how it can help you remember the books of the Bible.
You will be singing it in your head for days to come...sorry!
- Scripture memory
Philippians 3:8-9a (NIRV)
“Even more, I consider everything to be nothing compared to knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. To know him is the best thing of all. Because of him I have lost everything. But I consider all of it to be garbage so I can get to know Christ. I want to be joined to him.“
Thought for the week
May you treasure God’s Word in all you do!
